Introducing Andrew Wales, Brewer
Scottish immigrant Andrew Wales starting brewing beer in Alexandria, VA in 1770, which makes him the first commercial brewer in Washington, D.C. Wait—Washington, D.C.? Wales operated in Alexandria during the period when that busy tobacco port was part of the nation’s capital. He enjoyed a three-decade-long business relationship with George Washington, even as he sided with the Tory party during the War of Independence. Garrett Peck, author of the biography of Andrew Wales, will share his story as well as where to see sites connected to the Alexandria of Wales' era, including the old embankment of the Potomac River, archaeological excavations, and historic warehouses. Also learn how the Scotsman brought a bit of Edinburgh to his new home country.
